K10 Rovers On The Job


"Two NASA robots are surveying a rocky, isolated polar desert within a crater in the Arctic Circle. The study will help scientists learn how robots could evaluate potential outposts on the moon or Mars. The robots, K10 Black and K10 Red, carry 3-D laser scanners and ground-penetrating radar. The team arrived at Haughton Crater at Devon Island, Canada, on July 12 and will operate the machines until July 31."

16 July 2007 - K10 Black Shakedown Test


Today we worked on rover calibration and software tuning in the morning in preparation for a system test in the afternoon. We prepped K10 Black for operations, mounted the GPR instrument, inflated the tires, and calibrated steering.

13 July 2007 - K10 Red Robot completes checkout


Today's activity centered around getting K10 Red assembled and tested. We first set up the rover shelter provided by Mars Institute, with the help of a few of the Inuit helpers at camp.

12 July 2007 - K10 Robot Team arrives on Devon Island


Susan, Vinh, Mark and Matt arrived on Devon today in two Twin Otter flights, along with K10 Red and some other equipment. The flight from Resolute to HMP basecamp was about 45 minutes over some really fascinating and barren arctic terrain. Here are some pictures of the plane and views out the window.

9 July, 2007 - K10 Rovers Shipped to Haughton

After a flurry of activity, our rovers and support equipment were packed up last week and staged for pickup at NASA Ames. We had a total of 18 wooden crates, weighing about 3000 lbs. Here's a picture of Vinh To, one of the members of our field team, sitting on the crates taking a well deserved break.
