With NASA Langley's Open House, Public Gets Rare Opportunity to See World-Class Research Facilities and Historic Sites

The public will get a chance to examine world-class research facilities and see historic places connected to the early days of the nation's space program during an Oct. 21 open house at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

In celebration of 100th anniversary of Langley's founding in 1917, the center will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21. Admission will be free. Visitors will get up-close views of facilities including wind tunnels, laboratories and the center's aircraft hangar. Several points of interest have been designated National Historic Landmarks.

Children's activities, food trucks and lectures will be part of the event.

Visitors will see places where Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts trained and learn how, today, NASA refines new technologies driving our Journey to Mars. The public will follow in the footsteps of mathematician and Presidential Medal of Freedom-winner Katherine Johnson, whose story was told in the book and feature film "Hidden Figures."

Subject matter experts will be available for interviews about current research in aeronautics, space technology and Earth science taking place at the center.

When NASA Langley last opened its gates to the community for an open house in 2012, an estimated 10,000 people visited.

Media wishing to attend should contact Michael Finneran at 757-864-6110 or michael.p.finneran@nasa.gov.
