NASA Global Exploration Road Map Workshop

Date: 29-30 November 2017

Location: Moffett Field, CA, US,

NASA will host a two-day virtual community workshop, Nov. 29 and 30, to conduct discussions with external stakeholders that will inform development of an update to the Global Exploration Roadmap (GER). The GER is a publication authored by NASA and the other 14 space agencies that comprise the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG). The roadmap outlines a phased approach to achieving the common goal of sending humans to the surface of Mars.

The first session, Nov 29 will focus on mission concepts for cislunar space, the Moon and Mars, and discuss all that can be enabled by capabilities envisioned in the GER. The second session, Nov 30 will target discussion and feedback regarding functions which may be suited for possible commercial services. The discussions will include plans for future human exploration missions, including in-situ resource utilization. Participants will be introduced to these plans and invited to offer feedback.

“With the next update of the Global Exploration Roadmap, contributing space agency partners will share their common vision for missions beyond low-Earth orbit over the next decades,” said Kathy Laurini, NASA senior advisor for exploration and space operations, and current ISECG chair. “This workshop continues our commitment to engaging with stakeholders in industry and academia to inform GER development. Many of our international partner space agencies will support this workshop and use the opportunity to engage their stakeholder communities.”

The workshop will be primarily virtual, but seating for onsite attendance is available at the Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute, located at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. Registration is required, using the form located here. All non-U.S. citizen participants attending onsite must submit an international visitor form by Oct 27. The form and submission instructions will be provided after registration is received.

The ISECG is a voluntary, non-binding international coordination mechanism through which individual agencies may exchange information regarding interests, objectives, and plans in space exploration with the goal of strengthening both individual exploration programs as well as the collective effort. The third version of the GER is planned for publication in early 2018. The most recent version was published in 2013, and is accessible at
