U.S.-Japan Space Forum Presents: SPACE IN THE ABE-TRUMP ERA: NEW THREATS, NEW ACTORS

A Public Seminar at the George Washington University Space Policy Institute In January 2018, the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation will convene the sixth meeting of the U.S.- Japan Space Forum in Washington, D.C. This gathering of American and Japanese experts from the private sector, academia, and government has met regularly since 2014 to address areas of critical concern and opportunity for the American and Japanese space communities. This month, the U.S.-Japan Space Forum will hold meetings with members of the Trump administration and Congress to discuss the role of space in the U.S.-Japan relationship against a backdrop of evolving space actors, new uses of space, proliferating security threats, and persistent constraints on resources in both the United States and Japan. At the culmination of these meetings, on February 1st 2018, the Mansfield Foundation will partner with the George Washington University Space Policy Institute and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership on a public seminar. Members of the U.S. Japan Space Forum will discuss the emerging and evolving threats that underscore the importance of American and Japanese collaboration on space. The Forum will also assess emergence of new space technologies and actors and discuss challenges of reforming the legal and regulatory ecosystem in order to accommodate these developments. The seminar will conclude with a keynote address by Frank Rose, former assistant secretary of state for arms control, verification, and compliance.
