SpaceRef - Astronautics - Sensors - Spectrometer
Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) - AVIRIS is an optical sensor that delivers calibrated images of the upwelling spectral radiance in 224 contiguous spectral channels with wavelengths from 400 to 2500 nm. AVIRIS flies aboard a NASA ER-2 airplane and is used to identify, measure, and monitor constituents of the Earth's surface and atmosphere based on molecular absorption and particle scattering signatures. [NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory]
Planetary Integrated Camera Spectrometer (PICS) - PICS is expected eventually to replace whole suites of individual spacecraft instruments that, on some NASA missions, can weigh more than 180 kilograms (400 pounds) and take up as much room as a four-drawer filing cabinet. PICS combines some of the most productive and often-used space sensors into a 5-kilogram (11 pound) package. [NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory]
