SpaceRef - Earth Science - Solar Terrestrial Interactions - Ionospheric Studies

  • ARL/University of Texas Ionosonde - The University of Texas at Austin host this site for its ionosonde - a facility that transmits a pulse of radio and then calculates the length of time it takes for the wave to bounce off the ionospheric layers and return to the receiver, thereby determining the distance the wave travels. The ionospheric density and the required frequency relate directly.

  • CUTLASS Radar - CUTLASS is a new twin-station HF radar to study the high latitude ionosphere. The system has been constructed by the Radio and Space Plasma Physics Group at Leicester University.

  • Dynasonde at Tromsų, Norway - The Dynasonde is a digital HF sounder covering ca. 1-30 MHz. It is sometimes referred to as a frequency agile sounder, or Advanced Ionospheric Sounder. It can be run like an ionosonde or in other modes such as fixed frequency soundings, even like a partial reflection sounder.

  • EISCAT Scientific Association - The EISCAT Scientific Association is an international research organisation operating three geophysical research Incoherent Scatter Radar systems, an Ionospheric Heater and a Dynasonde in Northern Scandinavia.

  • Ionospheric Data Archived at NGDC - The Ionospheric Physics Group of NGDC has the mission of operating the World Data Center-A for Ionosphere portion of the WDC-A for STP, which is to seek out and archive all data, data products, and information related to the Ionosphere judged to be useful to our customers and secondary users.

  • Ionospheric Scintillation Predictions - These predictions are from a climatology of the distribution of the level of scintillation activity observed in the selected locations and times for the solar and geomagnetic conditions predicted for the specified dates and times by the NOAA Space Environment Center.

  • LiMIE: Linear Modeling of Ionospheric Electrodynamics - Space Weather Specification and Forecast - The LiMIE Web-based interface immediately downloads latest available IMF/SW data (measured by the ACE spacecraft at L1 point) from the NOAA/Space Environment Center (SEC) Web site and then provides specification and forecast of ionospheric parameters over both the Northern and Southern polar regions.

  • Millstone Hill Digisonde - Daily ionograms are posted on this website operated by the University of Massachusetts.

  • Real-Time UAF Eulerian Polar Ionosphere Model - The ionospheric forecast provided on this page contributes to the National Space Weather Program. The ionospheric maps are prepared with the Eulerian Parallel Polar Ionosphere Model (UAF EPPIM) (1) developed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC).

  • SuperDARN (Super Dual Auroral Radar Network) - SuperDARN is a network of High Frequency Radars used to study the earth's Ionosphere.

  • The Imaging Riometer Instrumentation Site (IRIS) - IRIS is an array of multiple narrow antenna beams pointing in different but overlapping directions. The ground based instrument has operated since the fall of 1993 on a continuous basis with a temporal resolution of 1 image each second and with a horizontal spatial resolution of approximately 25 km for features at an altitude of 90 km. Hosted by the University of Calgary.
