X-15 Program in Retrospect - This document looks back at the X-15 program, the first major investment of the United States in manned aerospace flight technology with had a broad objective to develop the new technologies needed for rocket-boosted hypersonic aircraft. The highest speed reached was Mach 6.7 (2,020 meters/sec) and the peak altitude reached was 108,000 meters.
