  • Committee on Astronomy and Astrophysics (CAA) - This National Research Council Space Studies Board task group is chartered to examine the status of space -and ground-based astronomy and astrophysics and provides assessments to NASA, the NSF, and other institutions as a joint committee of the Board on Physics and Astronomy and the Space Studies Board. The overall objective is to encourage progress in astronomy and astrophysics and to assist the federal government in planning programs in these fields.

  • Committee on Earth Studies - This National Research Council Space Studies Board committee provides continuing guidance to the Space Studies Board on civil Earth-observation activities in the general areas of Earth sciences and other remote-sensing applications. The scope of its scientific advice incorporates all Earth science disciplines that can be addressed from space, including the study of the atmosphere, ocean, geology and geophysics, global biology and ecology, and their interactions.

  • Committee on International Space Programs - This National Research Council Space Studies Board committee advises the SSB on international issues in the space sciences, with a focus on the elements influencing the effectiveness of cooperative efforts in research and mission objectives.

  • Committee on Space Shuttle Upgrades - This National Research Council Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board committee was tasked to examine NASA's plans to upgrade the Space Shuttle system. NASA presented a number of scenarios for future Space Shuttle operations including different Shuttle flight rates, budgets, and phase-out dates for Shuttle operations. For each of these scenarios, NASA presented their planned set of Shuttle upgrades, and the rationale and criteria used to select the upgrades. The committee assessed NASA's approach to Shuttle upgrades in two interim reports and one final report.

  • National Research Council Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board - The ASEB was established to apply the talents and energies of the aerospace engineering community to aerospace policy and technical issues. Its primary sponsors are the NASA Office of the Chief Technologist and the NASA Office of Aero-Space Technology. ASEB also undertakes studies and other activities on behalf of other NASA offices, such as the Office of Life and Microgravity Sciences and Applications and the Office of Space Flight. In addition, ASEB has performed studies for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Defense Nuclear Agency, Federal Aviation Administration, National Science Foundation, et al.

  • National Research Council Space Studies Board (SSB) - SSB provides external and independent scientific and programmatic guidance to NASA and other government agencies in the basic subdisciplines of space research. The SSB oversees a constellation of standing committees and ad hoc task groups, which produce long-range strategic research plans and prioritization of goals, as well as progress assessments.

  • NRC Committee on Space Biology and Medicine (CSBM) - CSBM advises the National Research Council's Space Studies Board on space and supporting ground-based research in space biology and medicine. CSBM is concerned with fundamental biological questions in biology as well as with human space flight and the biomedical and bioengineering systems required to sustain humans in space, particularly for long periods.

  • NRC Committee on Solar and Space Physics (CSSP) - This National Research Council Space Studies Board committee functions as an advisor to the SSB in the areas of the physical sciences that can be conducted from space and on the ground in support of space-based efforts, and on ground-based studies in the areas of solar-terrestrial physics. CSSP assists the SSB in carrying out studies, monitoring implementation of strategies, and formulating assessments for NASA, NSF, NOAA, and other government agencies.

  • NRC Task Group on Technology Development in NASA's Office of Space Science (TGTOSS) - This National Research Council Space Studies Board task group was chartered to provide an assessment of NASA's current approach to technology development.
