Earth's First (Repeatedly) Weightless iPhone

Editor's note: iPhones experienced weightlessness almost as soon as the first clumsy consumer bought - and dropped - one.

The other day I had a chance to take my iPhone aboard a Zero Gravity Corporation weightless flight sponsored by the Northrop Grumman Foundation. (See "Returning to Weightlessness" for the full story.)

My iPhone experienced a dozen weightless episodes - and still works just fine. I decided to play the Apple iTunes TV advertisement featuring U2's "Vertigo" on my iPhone.

Once again, I have to say that as was the case with my first experience with weghtlessness abord this plane, my second weightless experience was simply marvelous - and free of any "Vertigo".

Of course, the accelerometers inside the iPhone that tell it to change its screen orientation from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) orientation when rotated did not work while we were weightless.

This iPhone also had the distinction of being Earth's northernmost iPhone when I visited Devon Island last summer. In both cases, Matt Reyes was the camera operator for these videos.
