SpaceShipOne Makes Historic Flight

SpaceShipOne has completed its historic flight and has safely landed. SpaceShipOne reached its projected altitude of 62 miles (100 kilometers) even though its engine cut off early. This is the first private manned space flight.

Mike Melvill an accomplished Test Pilot and Vice President and General Manager of Scaled Composites was chosen to fly SpaceShipOne on its first attempt at private manned space flight. SpaceShipOne was carried aloft by the turbojet White Knight to an altitude of 50,000 feet (15,240 meters) where it was released and its rocket engines propelled the spacecraft to 62 miles (100 kilometers), briefly into space, before returning to Earth.
