WASHINGTON, D.C., issued March 11, 2005 – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics wishes to congratulate Dr. Michael Griffin on his nomination by President George W. Bush for the position of Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

AIAA President Don Richardson issued the following statement upon receiving the news:

"We are thrilled to hear that Mike has been recommended by the President for this important post.  One couldn't ask for a stronger leader at this time in our history.  Mike is one of our own, as a physicist and aerospace engineer – with a multitude of additional disciplines and experiences covering the spectrum.  He also knows NASA, so what a perfect alignment."

Mike is a Fellow of the AIAA – an esteemed membership honor – and has been active with the professional society for 30 years. For the past five years he has been a Director at Large on the AIAA Board of Directors.  He has also been active on the Space Systems and Space Transportation technical committees and is an author. Mike is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the AIAA Space Systems Medal.

For the past year, Mike has been working closely with AIAA staff and member leadership on a new strategic direction for the organization.

Richardson adds: "A real tribute to Mike is the breadth of his background, ranging from his space credentials as NASA Associate Administrator for Exploration to flight instructor certification -- all of which bear directly in his new nominated role."

Headquartered in suburban Washington, DC, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) serves over 35,000 members in 65 regional sections and 79 countries. AIAA membership is drawn from all levels of industry, academia, private research organizations, and government and focuses on emerging technologies in aviation, space and defense.
