Journalists are invited to attend the Sixth Annual International Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) Symposium at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., from June 19 through June 23.
Hundreds of scientists from more than 70 countries will gather at the event to discuss gravitational wave astronomy and the LISA mission. Speakers include international experts in astrophysics, fundamental physics, cosmology and aerospace engineering.
Gravitational waves promise to offer an entirely new window to observe the universe, a view based not on electromagnetic energy (radio, light, X-rays, gamma rays) but on gravitational energy. The gravitational waves that carry this energy are ripples in space and time that move at light speed, as predicted by Einstein. The symposium marks the coming of age for a field that had only a few dozen practitioners as little as a generation ago.
The first day of the meeting will address the basics of gravitational waves and the LISA mission, and the following days will shed light on expected wave sources as well as technological challenges for wave detection.
Reporters should register for the meeting by contacting Susan Hendrix on 301-286-7745, or Dewayne Washington on 301-286-0040.
