NASA astronauts on the International Space Station will link up Monday, Jan. 29, with sailors on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower for a special re-enlistment ceremony. The Eisenhower is the Navy's flagship for the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group.
The special call is set for 4:20 a.m. CST. It can be seen on NASA Television at 10:30 a.m. Aboard the space station, Expedition 14 Commander and Naval Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, assisted by his Flight Engineer and fellow Naval Commander Suni Williams, will conduct the long-distance re-enlistment of 16 sailors. At the time, the station should be flying about 220 miles above the southern Indian Ocean.
Lopez-Alegria has been in orbit since September 2006 and will return to Earth in April. Williams has been aboard the orbiting laboratory since December 2006 and will return to Earth in July. Both are graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy and Navy pilots.
