Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE:GY) company, announced today that its hydrazine gas generators provided the power for the hydraulic system that steered the first stage nozzle during the Ares I-X successful test flight. The Ares I-X test flight launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 11:30 EDT this morning.
Aerojet provided two hydrazine gas generators that drive the hydraulic system which is used to steer the large nozzle on the first stage solid rocket booster (SRB). These gas generators have flown on every space shuttle SRB since the inception of the shuttle program. The gas generators are built and refurbished in Aerojet's Redmond, Wash. facility.
"We are proud to provide NASA with reliable control system hardware," said Olwen Morgan, Aerojet manager of business development in Redmond, Wash. "We look forward to further support of NASA's new manned space initiatives."
