Message from the Director

Transition

To my colleagues at Ames,

On January 18, when I announced that I would be leaving Ames, I said I would share my personal plans for the future with you. I am now pleased to report that I will be assuming the Carl Sagan Chair for the Study of Life in the Universe at the SETI Institute in Mountain View. The Sagan Chair was established in 1997 in recognition of the increasing scientific interest and activity in the studies of the origin, evolution, nature, and distribution of life in the universe, especially when viewed in the contexts of extraterrestrial biology. I am looking forward to returning to the research world and am excited about the opportunities that this chair will provide for furthering the field of astrobiology.

This change will be effective February 15. Mr. Marvin "Chris" Christensen will be the Acting Center Director after I leave and has, in fact, begun the transition into this role. One of his first duties will be to lead the budget roll-out activities for Ames. Chris has been supporting me in a number of endeavors vital to the future of the center; he has the confidence of the Administrator, and I know he will lead you ably while the search for the new center director is conducted. Dr. Steven F. Zornetzer, Ames Deputy Director for Research, will continue in the capacity of Acting Deputy Center Director until a permanent Deputy Center Director is named.

Thank you for your support.

G. Scott Hubbard
Center Director
