The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center invites partners (experimenters) to participate in the development, integration, and on-orbit execution of research and technology experiments and demonstrations using the Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) Testbed aboard the International Space Station (ISS). (Note: the SCaN Testbed was formerly known as the CoNNeCT Project.) The SCaN Testbed flight system consists of reconfigurable, software defined radios, Radiofrequency (RF) systems operating at S-band, Ka-band, and L-band, and command and data handling and networking systems. The SCAN Testbed flight system is installed on an Express Logistics Carrier (ELC) located on the exterior truss of the ISS. The project is currently planning a minimum three-year experiment program, but may extend as circumstances warrant.
NASA intends to enter into Space Act Agreements (SAAs) with industry, Government agencies, and other partners to develop and field communications, navigation, and networking technologies in the laboratory and space environment based on reconfigurable, software defined radio platforms and the Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) Architecture.
This experiment call provides the partner an opportunity to gain valuable flight experience of potential new applications, and raise the technology readiness level (TRL) of these space applications by operating within the space environment. NASA will gain insight into the opportunity to assess new concepts and research and technologies in communications, navigation, and networking, such as future Global Positioning System signal assessments, high data rate operation at Ka-band, reconfigurable Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology and STRS standards development.
