NASA Announces Lunar Vertical Solar Array Technology (Lunar VSAT), 80HQTR20NOA01-20GCD_C1

Status Report From: NASA HQ
Posted: Friday, September 11, 2020

Lunar VSAT Appendix seeks proposals for the design and prototype fabrication of autonomously deployable and relocatable lunar surface solar arrays for future missions during the “Sustainment Period” of lunar South Pole exploration. NASA is planning a lunar landing near the moon’s South Pole in the 2024 time period, followed by establishment of a lunar base later in the decade. Local power generation will be critically important; solar power is a likely component of any architecture focused on a sustained presence at the South Pole. The existing GCD (Game Changing Development) Vertical Solar Array Technology (VSAT) project is focused on the development of solar arrays and related technologies necessary for sustained presence on the lunar surface circa 2028. This Appendix, Lunar VSAT, focuses on vertical array development. The minimum entry Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is TRL 3 at the time of proposal submission.

Eligibility: This Appendix is open to all categories of US and non-US organizations. See section 3.0 of the Appendix for full list of eligibility requirements/restrictions.

Award Details: This Appendix will utilize a base plus option where up to four (4) selections will be made for the Base effort focused on design and analysis tasks to ensure basic feasibility of the proposed system. Following the completion of the Base effort, NASA anticipates that up to two (2) Options will be exercised to awardees to build and test a prototype of the proposed system concept. Awards will result in firm-fixed priced contracts or Inter/Intra-Agency Agreements. Grants or Cooperative Agreements will not be awarded from this Appendix.
