NASA Two Heliophysics Explorer Draft Solicitations Released for Comment

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has released concurrently two Draft Heliophysics Explorers Science Investigations solicitations for comment. The Heliophysics Explorers Program (HEP) conducts Principal Investigator (PI)-led space science investigations relevant to SMD's heliophysics programs and will manage both solicitations. Heliophysics Explorers investigations must address NASA’s strategic heliophysics science goals:

 

·         Explore the physical processes in the space environment from the Sun to the Earth and throughout the solar system;

·         Advance our understanding of the connections that link the Sun, the Earth, planetary space environments, and the outer reaches of our solar system; and

·         Develop the knowledge and capability to detect and predict extreme conditions in space to protect life and society and to safeguard human and robotic explorers beyond Earth 

 

Draft AO Release Date:  June 22, 2022

Comments Due Date: July 22, 2022

Prospective investigators from any category of organizations or institutions, U.S. or non-U.S., will be welcome to respond when the final solicitations are released. Specific categories of organizations and institutions that will be welcome to respond include, but are not limited to, educational, industrial, and not-for-profit organizations, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs), NASA Centers, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and other Government agencies. Non-U.S. organizations may participate on a no-exchange-of-funds basis.

 

All interested parties must read the 2022 Draft AOs carefully for changes from prior HEP AOs. All proposals to the final AOs must comply with the requirements, constraints, and guidelines contained within those final AOs, as there may be changes from the drafts. 

 

The Science Office for Mission Assessments (SOMA) is the official source for further information on the draft solicitations, including the SMEX and MO Program Libraries and Question & Answer pages. Responses to all inquiries will be posted at the Questions and Answers (Q&As) location of the of the SOMA 2022 Heliophysics Explorers Web site: https://explorers.larc.nasa.gov/HPSMEX22/. Anonymity of persons/institutions who submit questions will be preserved. Proposers are encouraged to send comments and questions early, so that they may be fully addressed prior to the release of the final AOs.

 

No later than July 22, 2022, questions and comments regarding the 2022 SMEX Draft AO should be emailed to:

NASA has not approved the final issuance of either AO, and this notification does not obligate NASA to issue the final AOs and solicit proposals. Any costs incurred by prospective investigators in preparing submissions in response to this notification or are incurred completely at the submitter's own risk.
