Significant events identified by Satellite Analysis Branch meteorologists and reviewed by the Operational Significant Event Imagery support team Wednesday, May 14, 2003 are as follows:




VOLCANO ERUPTION IN MARIANA ISLANDS

IMAGE D13401: MODIS AQUA Channels 1, 2, 1<>05/14/2003 03:20 UTC<>Multichannel color composite<>Mariana Islands

An ash plume (indicated by the yellow arrows) is visible from an eruption of the Anatahan Volcano in the Mariana Islands in this MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) image from the Aqua satellite. The ash extends westward across the Pacific Ocean for hundreds of miles.

TROPICAL CYCLONE 01B

Tropical Cyclone 01B was located over the Bay of Bengal near 14.4N 86.0E at 06:00 UTC. The storm has been moving northward at 6 knots with maximum sustained winds estimated at 50 knots, gusts to 65 knots.
