SUBJECT: NASA Safety Notice Regarding the New Badge Holder

A NASA Safety Notice has been issued that identifies a potential safety and/or foreign object damage (FOD) hazard associated with the new Identity Stronghold badge holder. Under certain circumstances, the badge holder spring clips can release, becoming a projectile hazard to the eye, or a FOD hazard to flight hardware. Kennedy Space Center released the notice on August 15, 2008.

The Office of Protective Services has suspended issuing the badge holder from Identity Stronghold (intended to ensure compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12) until evaluations have been conducted that resolve the FOD and safety issues. The NASA Headquarters Office of Security and Program and Protection is working with key personnel to address security compliance requirements, operational needs, training, deficiencies, and safety issues, in order to mitigate all concerns.

Personnel should ensure the badge holder is not worn, or is properly secured, in the vicinity of sensitive flight hardware where FOD may be an issue. Individuals who want to exchange their badge holder for the older style one, may do so by walking into the issuance office (Building 566) between the hours of 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM or calling for an appointment at extension 4-0660.
