This digital image is a portrait of Earth's Western Hemisphere at the time of one of the strongest hurricanes ever observed in the Eastern Pacific - on September 9, 1997. The combination of science, engineering and artistry was generated by using data from three different Earth-observing satellite instruments.

This image of Earth’s city lights was created with data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). Originally designed to view clouds by moonlight, the OLS is also used to map the locations of permanent lights on the Earth’s surface.
