Eruption at Tvashtar Catena, IoEruption at Tvashtar Catena, Io

This pair of images taken by NASA's Galileo spacecraft captures a dynamic eruption at Tvashtar Catena, a chain of volcanic bowls on Jupiter's moon Io. They show a change in the location of hot lava over a period of a few months in 1999 and early 2000.

These images from NASA's Galileo spacecraft show changes in the largest active field of lava flows in the solar system, the Amirani lava flow on Jupiter's moon Io. Scientists have identified 23 distinct new flows by comparing the two images taken 134 days apart, on Oct. 11, 1999, and Feb. 22, 2000.

This movie clip of 48 frames taken by the Cassini spacecraft shows Jupiter's moon Io in the darkness of the giant planet's shadow. The sequence was recorded over a two hour interval that spanned nearly an entire eclipse on January 1, 2001.
