Mars on Earth
. Mars on Earth: Summer 2002 Field Season

This summer a number of Mars-oriented research projects in astrobiology, geology, and human factors research took place at several locations in the Canadian arctic. In this feature, we look at three of them: the Haughton Mars Research Project; the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station; and the McGill University Axel Heiberg Island Station.

2001 Mars Odyssey
. 2001 Mars Odyssey

On 7 April 2001, America's first mission to Mars since dual failures in 1999 will liftoff. Arrival time at Mars is set for late October 2001. Science operations will begin in January 2001. Odyssey will: determine the abundance of hydrogen; globally map the elements that make up the surface; acquire high-resolution thermal infrared images of surface minerals; provide information about the structure of the Martian surface; and record the radiation environment in low Mars orbit as it relates to radiation-related risk to human exploration.

Dennis Tito
. Dennis Tito's Space Vacation

American millionaire Dennis Tito is set to embark upon Earth's first self-financed trip into space. His destination? The International Space Station. This trip could make it easier for others to follow. It could also make it harder. Stay tuned and find out how this all turns out.

The InterPlanetary Internet
.
The InterPlanetary Internet (IPN)

Ten years ago few people had heard of the Internet. Even 5 years ago it was viewed by many as a technological curiosity - some thought it to be a passing fad. Now the so-called "dot com" economy makes multi-billion dollar deals on a regular basis. Ten years from now the Internet could be a phenomenon that has expanded beyond Earth to form an interplanetary network of Internets reaching to Mars and beyond. That is the vision of Vint Cerf and his colleagues at the InterPlanetary Internet (IPN) team.

NEAR in Eros Orbit
. Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous Mission (NEAR)

The NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft has now completed its mission by landing on asteroid 433 Eros, the first spacecraft to have ever orbited - and landed upon an asteroid. Previously, we've only flown past asteroids and snapped a few pictures. NEAR orbited Eros and mapped it in unprecedented, intimate detail. The primary mission of NEAR was to orbit asteroid Eros for approximately 1 year. During that time it conducted a variety of measurements designed to help understand the composition, mineralogy, and overall characteristics of Eros.
