Subject: 2,498 laptops later: The Miracle Has Occurred
As you all know, today is the Agency deadline for all laptops to be fully encrypted. I am happy to report that as of 10:30 this morning Langley reached our goal by completing the DAR encryption of 2,498 government and ACES systems. In addition, in December alone Langley is excessing 657 laptops representing 47% of the government-owned laptops in our inventory. Our OCIO team has provided excellent guidance and direction of the DAR initiative and I want to thank OCIO for their leadership. At the same time, this has certainly been a center-wide collaboration involving civil servants and contractors from every organization. I want to express my appreciation to the IT staff and employees across the entire center for doing whatever was required to meet the very aggressive DAR deadline. Taking time out of already busy work schedules to complete the DAR installation as the holidays were quickly approaching was certainly difficult, but our Langley team stepped up to the task as you always do.
We know that laptops will at times be lost or stolen but now that all Langley devices are encrypted our chances of losing sensitive data are greatly reduced. As a reminder, DAR encryption only protects your laptop data when the it is powered off and before you enter your DAR password, so make sure you power down your laptop before taking it with you.
One more note - unfortunately there is often an increase in cybercrime over the holiday season and this is typically one of the worst times of the year for fraud-related attacks. We have already seen fake e-mails from companies like UPS and FedEx here at the Center, so be careful with e-mail links and attachments as well as your online browsing this holiday season.
Again, my sincere thanks for your efforts over the past several weeks that enabled us to complete our DAR deployment today. Best wishes for a happy and peaceful holiday season.
